Changing the playing fields for Cavaliers
Golf, tennis, football and baseball programs
would see improvements in their facilities
BY JERRY RATCLIFFE
After winning its second na-
tional championship in the last
three years, Virginia tennis may
get a new home.
As part of a 10-year strategic
planning process that began in
2012, a new outdoor tennis fa-
cility worthy of hosting NCAA
championships has been iden-

tified as a portion of UVa’s pro-
posed athletic facilities projects.
A football support building and
enhancements to baseball’s Dav-
enport Field are also on the list.
A new support facility for
men’s and women’s golf gained
approval by the Albemarle Plan-
ning Commission last week, but
the ability to move forward with
the project is dependent upon
UVa approvals and the ability
to raise the $8 to $8.7 million for
the building. The university is
currently soliciting gifts for the
golf facility.
“Building and maintaining the
highest quality facilities in the
country with the purpose of at-
tracting and developing the best
student-athletes is one compo-
nent of our 10-year goals,” said
Craig Littlepage, UVa’s director
of athletics since 2001. “We’ve
seen our sports programs ben-
efit from the facility investments

that have been made in recent
years. Our ‘All in for Excellence’
fundraising initiative is designed
to position Virginia athletics to
be successful for years to come.
An important part of that effort
includes both enhancements to
existing facilities and building
new ones.”
