Growing up, he had two sisters, Nadine and Veneta, and one brother, William. Robert and his family lived in Osceola, but later the family moved between Appleton City and Lowry City. In 1935, he graduated from Osceola High School and worked the local grocery and feed store. In 1940, Robert met and eventually married his beautiful wife, Mable Viola Winn. Shortly after they married, the couple move to Kansas City, where he helped build Sunflower O. In 1943, Robert enlisted in the Army and was stationed in the South Pacific. Robert was later discharged from Fort Leonard Wood. For many years, Robert worked at Millgrams Grocery in Kansas City. He always enjoyed working in the grocery business. During this time, Mabel worked at WHB radio and also in the banking industry. “We worked hard and long hours,” Robert said with a smile. “So we didn’t have a lot of free time.” Because of this, Robert and Mable always looked forward to their vacations. They were fortunate enough to be able to travel the United States. In their spare time, the couple enjoyed dancing, going to parties, and eating out. Robert was a member of the Lions Club, is a lifetime member of the American Legion, and has been a part of the Masons for more than 50 years. In 2011, Robert was crowned the Community Springs Valentine’s Ball King. Robert participates in as many activities at Community Springs as he can. At Community Springs, he enjoys his life and doing things with his friends. Thank you Robert for being our resident of the month and sharing your story with us.
