Resident of the Month
Mary Charlene (Carter) Broughton was
born on October, 26 1927, to Frank and
Mamie Carter in Commerce, Okla. Charlene
was the only girl and the youngest of five
children.
In 1937, Charlene and her family moved
to El Dorado where they opened Carter’s
Market. Since it was a family business, the
Carter children and several grandchildren
have worked in the store.
Charlene graduated from El Dorado
Springs High School. While there, she was
highly active in band, choir, and the basketball team. In October 1950, Charlene
married Kenneth (Steve) Broughton. The couple were married 61 years, During
their time together, they couple has been blessed with one daughter, LaDanta
Bush, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Shortly after the couple were married, Charlene and Steve relocated to
Kansas City. While there, Steve worked for the General Motors Company and
Charlene was employed at Cook Chemical Company. In 1951, Steve and Charlene
returned to El Dorado Springs. Upon their return, Steve was employed at the
city’s power plant and Charlene began working at Sac Osage Electric in the office,
where she continued to work for 36 years, until her retirement.
After retirement, Charlene, Steve and another couple spent time traveling all
over the world. Together, the two couples traveled Europe; visiting places like
England, France, Italy, Belgium, Austria, Switzerland and Germany. The couple
would also take cruises to Hawaii, Australia, Alaska, New Zealand and the
Caribbean.
Charlene has a deep love for her church and music. As a member of the First
Baptist Church for more than 60 years, Charlene has volunteered as a Sunday
school teacher and song leader in the church choir and ministry. Her love of music has lead her to join the Sweet Adeline’s singing group, volunteer as the lead
singer for Community Springs Health Care Facility and as a member of the El Dorado Springs Municipal Band, where she played the clarinet.
Charlene appreciates the helpful and friendly staff at Community Springs
Healthcare Facility and enjoys the same church services here at the facility that
she used to be involved with before she became a resident. Thank you, Charlene,
for sharing your story and being Community Springs Healthcare Facility’s Resident of the Month for May.
