Resident Spotlight
Wendelin Herrman
Wendelin Hermman was born in Liebenthal,
Kansas Oct. 9, 1935. His family was of German
Heritage, with his great, great, great grandfather’s
family moving from Germany to Boston, and then to
Topeka, Kansas. The family founded the town of
Liebenthal, which is located in Rush County.
Wendelin lived there until he was 14 years old.
In 1951 the family moved to Independence, Mis-
souri after Wendelin’s father inherited one of the
family homes. It was a large home that Wendelin, his two brothers and four
sisters lived in with their dad, who worked in maintenance for the City of
Independence, and mom, who became a nurse.
The family spoke mostly German, so when Wendelin started at St. Joseph
School, at the age of five, he had to learn the English language. He graduated
from St. Mary’s and later from Drury University. After graduating from Dru-
ry he had a short eight hour break before he was drafted into the U.S. Army.
His role in the Army was as a translator for the Commander of the NATO
Base in Germany and he became a Specialist 4 th Class.
He continued his studies at Johannes University, in Mainz, Germany. Af-
ter returning to the U.S. he taught German and social studies in the Kansas
City School District for more than 25 years. He later taught special classes
for the staff at St. Luke’s Hospital. As a teacher of Kansas University, he
was asked to teach the German language and culture to military personnel
that were going on assignment to Europe.
Wendelin has many talents and skills. He knows many dance routines and
enjoys music in general. He likes being on stage, acting and literature. He
also enjoys the outdoors and nature. While at Community Springs Wendelin
is still very active with horseshoes, bingo, dancing
and reading.
