Liz and her family live in El Dorado Springs, Missouri, with her husband Matt and their six children, in addition to their four four-legged children. Thank you, Liz, for serv- ing as our new Beautician . Resident Spotlight Margaret Marie (Gibbs) Smith Margaret was born Jan 3, 1919, right after WWI. She was the oldest of four children and the only girl. Margaret lived in El Dorado Springs. The family didn’t know much about the other towns in the area. Her dad hauled stuff for people from the train to where they wanted it, and her mom took in laundry, so she could have some extra money, because the family was poor. Margaret was a student through 9 th grade, and then decided she didn’t need to go to school any longer. She went to work at the Miller home, a boarding house that served noon meals, helping in the kitchen. “In our free time we would go to the city park and listen to the bands play,” said Margaret. Margaret met Carl when they were young. After the two met, Carl and his family moved to the country, and the two didn’t meet up again until they were in their teens. Carl had gone to work for the Civilian Conservation Corps. “When he came home for a visit we met at the church. I kept looking back at him. He had the prettiest auburn curls,” said Margaret. The couple was married Dec. 11, 1936, when Margaret was 17. She lied and said she was 18, even though she wasn’t quite there yet. Carl had to have his mom sign for him because they didn’t believe he was 18. The couple has three children, Valarie Jean Beaty, Sandra Carl O’Neal, and Sonny Smith. Carl was drafted at the end of WWII but he was only in for seven months. He trained to go to the European Theatre and soon after that, the war ended. Carl passed away on Dec. 7, 2009, and was buried on the couple’s 71 st wedding anniversary. Thank you, Margaret, for sharing your story with us.
