Resident of the Month
Ruby Fern (Hays) McConnaughey was born in
Taberville, Mo., on Aug. 8, 1942, to Amy Mann and
Lester Hays. Her father was a farmer, and they lived in
Taberville.
Ruby went to school in Rich Valley and Taberville,
until the family moved to Cedar County in 1953. She
went to school in El Dorado Springs, and graduated in
1960 while pregnant with her son.
Following graduation, Ruby worked at the shoe
factory for two years. She also started taking CNA
classes at Cedar County Memorial Hospital as it was
being built.
Ruby met her husband, Gene McConnaughey in
Nevada, Mo., and they were married by Rev. Marcum
on July 14, 1962. When they were married, Gene had three children and Ruby adopted them
and raised them like her own. The couple had two more children together, and lived in El
Dorado Springs.
Ruby lost her oldest son, Gary Dean, in a car wreck years ago. They lived in Nevada for a
few months, but moved back to El Dorado Springs. She also worked at the nursing home as
an aid and a Med Tech from 1964-1971. Ruby then went to work at Cedar County Memorial
as a nurse’s aid and ward clerk. “I had to have 40 hours for my EMT license, but I got it,”
says Ruby.
The McConnaugheys bought a liquor store called Rudy's, and were in business three years
until it was robbed at gunpoint. “They didn’t get my money, it was hid,” says Ruby.
Ruby worked at Dunbrooke for seven years and babysat for seven years, before going
back to the hospital as a registered dietitian before her retirement. When her husband passed
away in 1999, Ruby moved to an apartment, started attending Community Church, and was
saved.
She enjoys fashion, shopping, jewelry and her makeup. Ruby has eight grandchildren and
seven great-grandchildren. She volunteers to help mend and sew for the other residents. She
also embroiders for fun, and has made several quilts in the past.
“My favorite thing about being at Community Springs is the care and company of the
staff and other residents,” says Ruby.
