DeShazo born to George and Beulah Reeves on Aug. 15 in Cedar County. She and her seven siblings helped their parents run the family farm. “Everyone worked together,” stated Melba. “We would tend to the garden, crops and help with the cattle.” After graduating from El Dorado Springs R-2 Schools, Melba met and eventually married her husband Frank DeShazo. The couple was blessed with two children. Eventually they would adopt and raise their grandson. They have also been blessed with four grand children and one great-grandchild. In 1991, the DeShazo family moved to Lawrence, Kan. While there, Frank worked, and retired, from Merch Drug Co., and Melba worked as a secretary at the County Court House. In her spare time, Melba gave back to her community, being involved in the local quilting club and ladies aide. She has always enjoyed making pies, jams and jellies for friends, family, and church members, earning her the nickname “Mrs. Smucker’s.” After retirement, Frank and Melba would take numerous bus tours across the United States. According to Melba, the highest point in her life was when she was saved by the Lord. Melba enjoys being involved in the activities and games at Community Springs every day. Thank You Melba for sharing your story and being our Resident of the Month. Are you a caring individual who would like to assist in caring for the elderly?
