Meet our
Resident of the Month
Mary “Hides” Cates was born on June 28,
1918 to John and Clarissa Hide in
Lincoln, England. After graduating she
took higher education in bookkeeping
and secretarial skills.
During World War II, while serving as a
volunteer for the Red Cross, Mary met
Ferrel Cates, whom she would later marry.
After the couple were married, they Mary
and Ferrel moved, making their new
home in Missouri. This was the first time
Mary had left the only home she had ever
known. The couple were blessed with 61
years of marriage. Over the years, Mary
and Ferrel were bless with five children: John, Richard, Patrick, Michelle, and
Nancy.
After more than 30 years, Mary would eventually return to her home in England
for a visit. Thereafter, she would visit her beloved England every 2-3 years.
In 1958, Mary took a position as a secretary and bookkeeper at Benton High
School in St. Joseph, Mo. She loved her one and only job, and in 1985, after 28
years of service, Mary retired.
Mary enjoyed anything she can do with her hands. She would stay busy by
quilting, sewing, cross-stitching and working in the yard. She is also a huge
sports fan and loves the Royals, Chiefs, and her Mizzou Tigers. Her greatest joy
are her children and grandchildren, whom she adores.
Mary still enjoys life’s simple pleasures and is in her element when a baby is
near. According to her family, she was a wonderful cook and a patient Mom.
When you ask her how she is doing, her positive, signature response is “I’m on
TOP of the World.”
Thank you, Mary, for sharing your story and being our Resident of the Month.
