Meet our
Resident of the Month
Ernest Harris was born Aug. 1, 1928
in Tarkio, Mo., to Charles and Lydia
(Macrae) Harris. Ernie was the eldest of
six children: Carl, Paul, Frank deceased),
Ada and Lorene.
When he was two years old, Ernie and
the rest of his family relocated to El
Dorado Springs. Ernie attended grade
school at the Liston School on North
Main. He recalls that his third grade
teach was Mrs. Shaw, a current resident
of Community Springs Healthcare Facility.
During his teen years, Ernie worked various jobs around town. Before school started,
Ernie could be found starting furnaces at the hotel on West Spring . In the afternoons, he
could also be found setting up pins at the local bowling alley. But it was his job at Carter’s
Grocery that gave him the best training and work experience; something he would carry
with him throughout the remainder of his professional life.
After his graduation from high school, Ernie took a job at the Sac Osage Co-op. In December 1951, Ernie reported for duty in the U.S. Army. Ernie began his military career at
Camp Cook, Calif. After basic training, he was stationed in Japan and then Korea. After
being promoted to Sergeant, Ernie was sent to Camp Carson, Colo., where he would
eventually be discharged.
After his retirement form the U.S. Army, Ernie took a job as a payroll clerk at MidAmerica Dairy. In 1959, Ernie became a State Farm Insurance agent, eventually opening
his own is office in El Dorado Springs, where he remained until his retirement in 1994.
An active member of the First Baptist Church and El Dorado Springs community, Ernie
was the director of the church choir, taught Sunday School and held other offices. Ernie
was a Cub Scout Leader, a city council member, a member of the Jaycees, President and
Curator of the Preserve our Past Museum and was the president and charter member of
the Light House Children’s Theatre. Ernie has always loved the city and people of El
Dorado Springs.
On Dec.24, 1953, Ernie married Nancy Miller. The couple have been blessed with three
sons, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The couple loved to travel. Together,
Ernie and Nancy have all over the United States, visiting various places along the way, and
have traveled to several foreign countries. Thank you, Ernie, for sharing your story with us
and being Community Springs Healthcare Facility’s Resident of the Month for March.
