RAJAN, CONTRIBUTING WRITER I t wouldn’t be a stretch to say Glen Rock residents don’t consider the borough’s past his-story, or her-story, but more our- story. Sue Tryforos, president of the Glen Rock Historical & Preservation Society (GRHPS), explains since the organization’s inception in 1992, borough residents have played an active and invaluable role in helping its mission to preserve the borough’s history. “Since that time, the GRHPS has benefit- ted greatly from the generosity of the com- munity,” said Tryforos. This generosity comes in many forms, including donating memorabilia, even cherished family heirlooms. For example, she cites a resident who donated several items belonging to an ancestor. The ancestor, Willum Bosland, had immigrated to the United States from The Netherlands, as was the case with many early Bergen County families, Tryforos noted. Bosland eventually worked as a farmer along Prospect Street in Saddle River Township, which was how the borough was then known, explained Try- foros, who’s also been appointed the official borough historian by the mayor and council. The donor had lovingly cared for several of Bosland’s farming utensils and other personal belongings. However, when she downsized recently from a house to a condo, she no longer had room for the larger pieces, and none of her family members wanted to take possession of these items. Consequently, she donated the cherished artifacts to the GRHPS: two large, human-powered farm cultivators that worked the land in Glen Rock, plus a 1911 Victor Talking Machine, a pre-electric Victrola, with a collection of records, and Bosland’s personal hand-made ice skates that he brought with him to this country. “Here’s a great example of a donor who trusted the GRHPS enough to gift us several > Among the items in the Glen Rock Historical & Preservation Society’s current police display is a photo of the Glen Rock Police Department during the 1930s.
