Changing lives through connection

REACH Council brings organizations, residents together to tackle local challenges head-on

Community members across Johnson County are joining forces through REACH Across Communities to address issues ranging from substance misuse prevention to mental health awareness and youth leadership development.

The initiative, known locally as REACH Across Johnson County, operates as a community coalition made up of organizations, leaders and residents working together to improve community well-being through education, outreach and prevention efforts.
The coalition focuses on reducing youth substance abuse while promoting“ safe and healthy choices vital to the well-being of our community.”
The coalition is part of REACH Council, a nonprofit organization serving Ellis, Johnson and Hill counties. Its work is guided by the Strategic Prevention Framework, a community-based planning process that uses data, collaboration and evaluation to address local needs before problems escalate.
Programs and initiatives currently include naloxone training and distribution, mental health activities, safe medication storage education, policy advocacy and parent and youth education related to substance misuse prevention.

Coalition Opportunity program, students from across Johnson County participate in leadership development, peer-to-peer messaging campaigns and community awareness projects. Organizers say the program helps students learn responsibility, time management and advocacy skills while encouraging positive social norms.
The organization also hosts Rise Together Socials, monthly and quarterly family-friendly gatherings designed to encourage conversations surrounding mental health topics such as resilience, connection and self-worth. Events include activities, discussions and free meals for attendees.
In addition to outreach events, REACH Across Johnson County connects residents with local support services
through its online resource hub, StartingPointJCTX. org, which provides information about community resources available throughout Johnson County.
Another big initiative of the coalition is the Pop-Up Prom event. Hosted in Cleburne, Burleson and Waxahachie, the event provides dresses, suits and other prom-related items for those in need.
The coalition emphasizes collaboration among what it calls 12 community sectors, including schools, parents, businesses, healthcare professionals, law enforcement, youth organizations and faith-based groups. Leaders say broad community participation is essential to creating longterm solutions for local challenges.
