How Brynleigh McFarlin turned a lifetime of motion into Keene’ s first state title

On a warm Thursday in Austin, the final lap didn’ t feel like the end of a race. It felt like the closing scene of a story that had been building for years.
Keene graduate Brynleigh McFarlin— known to most as“ BK”— leaned into the final stretch of the 3A
3200-meter run, legs steady, stride controlled, the moment fully hers. When she crossed the finish line in 11:01.22. She didn’ t just win. She made history.
McFarlin captured Keene ISD’ s firstever state championship and was named the 3A Athlete of the
Meet, scoring more points than any other competitor.
And yet, if you ask her, it wasn’ t just about the medal.
“ It’ s so fulfilling,” she said.“ This has been a goal of mine since I was little— coming here as a kid and watching. To finally accomplish that … it means everything.”
To understand McFarlin’ s rise, you have to understand one thing: slowing down has never really been her style.
Since freshman year, she’ s been everywhere— cross country, track, basketball, volleyball, cheer, tennis, plus a long list of academic and leadership commitments. Not just participating, but excelling. Always.“ I have a lot of different passions,” she said.“ Doing all these things keeps me from getting burnt out.” That mindset didn’ t come out of nowhere.
