Community Insider Fall 2019 | Page 19

One condominium community in San Diego County attempted to capture ground water and spent upwards of $30,000.00 for an engineer to design a system. When all was set up and functioning, the contracted landscape company for the community soon noticed that plant material began to die at the level where water was hitting it. An analysis of the water revealed that while water was tested for human waste, it wasn’t tested for minderals that would negatively impact plant material. This community had to abandon the costly system and revert back to potable water distributed by their City in order to save the landscaping. would have to be distributed manually. Manual distribution increases the cost of landscaping services thus negating potential financial savings. Yvette Huffman is the owner of Trilogy Community Management and an active member of CAI as a board member and publication committee member. Yvette has served the San Diego area in the consulting of common interest developments for 25 years. While the concept of capturing water is an excellent notion in theory, the reality is not applicable to a condominium community. It is best applied in a single family home setting where an owner can control the use and distribution of the water to the plant material in any manner that makes sense.
