Wide Angle Youth Media amplifies the voices and creativity of Baltimore youth through media education and experience . My experience at Wide Angle has been a packed ride . My supervisor , Peymaan , dips his toes in many areas of the organization ’ s inner workings , so I ’ ve learned a lot about a wide range of topics , ranging from administrative tasks to video filming , video editing , financing , to student program assistance .
One of the most significant things I learned during my internship is my knowledge and education about film . I had always thought I was going to go into mission driven advocacy and organizing work , but in the past year , I ’ ve shifted the means through which I want to engage in this work . I love storytelling and creativity , and I want that to be part of my life path . I ’ ve always loved art but have always more so viewed myself as a consumer of it . I recently declared a film minor , and I have been working on film crews and learning about the art of filmmaking throughout the past year . My placement at Wide Angle has merged both passions and allowed me to gain significant knowledge in the film world that I previously hadn ’ t been exposed to . I ’ ve learned more about cameras and shot composition through hands-on experience working on a documentary set and through post-production work . I also learned from some of my coworkers who are gear nerds more about cameras and equipment overall , which allowed me to gain a lot more technical knowledge . One of my coworkers , Matt , even gifted me a piece of camera equipment !
I ’ ve done administrative work , advocacy work , and outreach in the past , but never with a nonprofit with Wide Angle ’ s capacity . Throughout the summer , I ’ ve learned a lot more about the nitty-gritty of administrative work for a medium-sized non-profit . I ’ ve learned how many additional administrative tasks Wide Angle ’ s programming requires , especially with legal and financial needs .
Supporting administrative and operational tasks has improved my communication and organizational skills most heavily . I ’ ve learned that detail and thoroughness is one of the most important practices in a role like the one I took on , because you act as a bridge for the organization . Making sure that everything you are trying to relay is clear makes the organization stronger , whether through daily communication , or when creating shared documents / projects for the organization .
Working at Wide Angle has made me realize that I can find an organization where I can be myself . I had a corporate experience in the past couple of years where I felt I couldn ’ t express myself with my coworkers or in my work , which taught me that is not what I wanted for my career . Wide Angle made me feel that I did not have to hide my social and political commitments or my interests in my workplace , and that there are positions out there that can allow me to express myself in my work in a meaningful way . WAYM has given me faith that I can do work that makes me feel at home .
Researched and completed outreach to national , regional , and local advocacy organizations for a systems-change case study on the role media plays in their work
Collected information on retreat centers , transportation , and workshop activities for organization bonding
Assisted sound and video for film documentary production about youth food insecurity in Baltimore
Supported office administrative tasks such as managing the phone , filing and organizing organizational records , managing intake of tax forms for students in programming , and supporting community partners , students , and parents
Aided the organization in the hiring process by constructing interviews , conducting interviews , and communicating with candidates
