If I could sum up these past few months with Rebuild , Overcome , and Rise in one word ? Fiery .
This was my first summer in Baltimore , and apart from the scorching sun sizzling up the humid sauna of the mid-Atlantic air , I also had the chance to see within my coworkers and my supervisors a fiery passion for service to our communities .
At ROAR , we help survivors of crime with supportive and legal services in achieving their goals , based on their own personal idea of success . Despite my short time with them , I feel as if they also helped me in a similar way .
My work during this internship focused on community engagement and , as a student of the pandemic , it was a transformative experience for me to finally delve head-first into all the components that make up the city of Baltimore . As students on our campus , unless we take the initiative to do so , there aren ’ t many opportunities for us to stray from the block surrounding our school , let alone to take the time to learn from and experience the cultures surrounding us . For my work , one of the responsibilities I had was reaching out to other community-based-organizations in the city to find intersections where we could collaborate , and ROAR could reach out to members of their organizations and provide our services . Speaking to these community leaders , it was evident how passionate they were about having spaces where community members could learn more about potential services that they may be able to benefit from , which really emphasized the power of nonprofits and grassroots organizations to bring about intentional and positive change on both an individual but also collective scale .
Within my organization , I looked towards my coworkers and my supervisor and I saw people who I aspire to be . With the people that I ’ ve talked with and heard stories about their lives and experiences , I saw people from whom I have so much to learn .
Researched community-based organizations and nonprofits active in Baltimore City to facilitate communication and inter-collaborative events and build networks of community resources
Facilitated engagement with Baltimore City , actively participating through inperson outreach at community outreach events , liaising with Baltimore community members to elevate the presence of Rebuild , Overcome , and Rise and offer the organization ’ s resources
Led interviews of former clients of Rebuild , Overcome , and Rise on experience management platform Qualtrics to identify trends to improve quality of service and experience
Evaluated and updated client forms , adapting the medium from an electronic Qualtrics form to a Portable Document Format for a transition from a virtual to an in-person modality to increase accommodations for clients without access to technology
