Over the past few weeks , I really had to deal with some unexpected twists and turns and realize that flexibility is the best policy . While I was supposed to start the internship off with a clinic on my very first day , not knowing anything about estate planning , I tested positive for COVID two days before it began . My next two weeks were remote , and I started participating in court later than planned . I started the lower priority online projects which , to be honest , were not the most fun , but guided me on what estate planning looks like amidst the housing inequities that we see in Baltimore .
Despite the slow start , I am ending the summer with so much more knowledge and also a lot more anger about the legal challenges that Baltimore City residents face . At an application assistance day that the Home Preservation Project ( HPP ) hosted , one client shared some of the issues she faced with preserving her home and paying her mortgage , while also dealing with the infamous Home Assistance Fund , which PBRC staff always describes as one of the most frustrating housing assistance programs . Sometimes when I went to court to support the Maryland Immigration Legal Assistance Project ( MILAP ), I didn ’ t even get to interpret information for the clients and the immigration attorneys like I was trained to when clients wanted to apply for asylum or other programs for their children . The last few times , I cared for the children that came with the clients and kept them occupied with " Subway Surfers " or coloring sloths and bubbles , so they didn ’ t have to hear their parents stories of abuse or violence that prompted them to come into this country . All day , the clients PBRC works with deal with the built-in hurdles of the US legal system that make it hard to be low-income , an immigrant , or a person of color . While PBRC cannot tackle all of them alone , working with other organizations to advocate for and guide clients to short term solutions , one-on-one consults , and brief legal advice makes a difference , and I am extremely grateful for the opportunity I had to participate in it .
I am so grateful for the time I have spent with my supervisor , Jade , all that she has taught me , the indepth check-ins we had , and all of her amazing feedback . All the other staff with HPP and PBRC more broadly were so wonderful to me , and I hope to come back .
