Working in the Office of Councilmember James Torrence has given me a newfound understanding of municipal actors .
As an intern who has never worked in government before , I was daunted by the learning curve . I was concerned about how to handle difficult conversations with constituents or how to navigate the 311 system . However , my supervisor and the office as a whole guided me perfectly . Their experienced wisdom comforted me , and they never let me get overwhelmed . While the Councilmember was a busy person , he was never too busy to take the time in meetings to carefully contextualize any issues or events to me so that I was always in the loop about his progress in projects or his relationships in the community . The time , genuine care , and appreciation the Councilmember showed me reflected on how he also treats the residents he represents .
As a legislator , policy is a main priority for the Councilmembers and their office . However , so is constituent service . Seeing the office inundated with all types of calls about 311 service requests or other concerns , I was stunned . Learning how each agency is connected to different services and how the flow of service requests is handled , I found that organization and clear communication is the key to the efficiency and efficacy of the office .
Being on the other side , I am also able to see just how formidable the force of the collective is . In volume , there is power that can put pressure on government actors to keep their promises or serve a specific need . The office taught me that the most important skill in any new office setting , especially in a collaborative environment , is active listening . This applies to my boss , my coworkers , and the constituents . I am so thankful for this eye-opening experience working in local government and all the wisdom that Councilmember Torrence imparted .
Developed an online public curriculum entitled “ Resident Academy ” to educate constituents on how to participate in decision-making processes and resources in city government
Conducted daily constituent service requests by navigating the 311 Salesforce System with effective interagency written communication
Analyzed and catalogued service requests to track patterns and statistics in relation to the socioeconomic well-being of each District 7 neighborhood
