I came into this summer a stereotypical Hopkins student with a patently limited knowledge of Baltimore , but my time with the Neighborhood Design Center has changed that greatly . I ’ ve gained soft knowledge - how beautiful Station North looks from my office windows in the Motor House , and which seat is my favorite on the Purple Circulator - and I ’ ve gained hard knowledge - how many years it takes to complete an infrastructure project in this city , and how to most efficiently get grant money from the state . My work with NDC has exposed me to places I ’ ve seen before , like a baseball complex near Morgan State , and places I ’ d never heard of , like the first Black men ’ s social club in the United States ( Arch Social Club , by the way , in Penn North !).
My work was as eclectic as NDC is . Though I describe NDC as an urban planning nonprofit , it far transcends blueprints and hammers . The goal is to help communities develop built environments that best reflect them , whether that means we facilitate community engagement , create a design , manage a project , or lend an ear . With my supervisor Julia , I planned an event where participants could choose their favorite layout for a small park . With the executive director Jen , I helped Arch Social Club keep tabs on its grant applications and contracts . No project is the same , and for someone whose goal was to become acquainted with Baltimore , this served me perfectly .
Yet my internship was most defined by the people I met . I sat in dozens of meetings with individuals wielding a vested interest in the community . I talked with activists , architects , landscapers , co-workers , solar power installers , and even Mayor Scott ( not sure if I ’ ll ever live it down ), and each brought unique perspective and expertise . It really is these locals who give Baltimore its famous charm . I ’ m honored to have worked on so many projects that ’ ll make my new city ’ s built environment mirror the charm of its residents , and I hope that I continue to learn and understand even more about the city over my next three years at Hopkins .
Reconciled dozens of Arch Social Club ’ s documents and email chains into a coherent , detailed timeline for its grantors to review to help Arch Social move forward with its overhauling renovation
Developed an interactive map and staff-wide reflection activity that showcased the distribution of our pro bono work throughout Baltimore
Aided the Upton Planning Committee in its creation of a Black Arts & Entertainment District welcome center and renovation of Representative Parren Mitchell ’ s former home
Facilitated a presentation that highlighted how NDC can help the Northwood Baseball League redevelop its fields while better serving its community
