Personal growth . I feel that these two words encapsulate the theme of my whole summer . When my supervisor told me about the main project I ' d be working on this summer - writing a health and wellness curriculum for MissionFit ' s Strength Ambassadors program , I was a little nervous . It seemed like a daunting undertaking , and I felt unsure because I didn ' t think I was very knowledgeable about the content I would be writing . I was also uncertain about how the work would align with my future career goals .
I poured many hours into researching mindfulness , breathing techniques , effective goal setting , movement , and general physical fitness . I had the opportunity to engage in all the activities that the YouthWorkers did , from yoga and journaling to cooking lessons and workouts . I ' ve realized that after all this time researching and writing content to guide the YouthWorkers in learning health and wellness skills , I ' ve actually done the same for myself , taking agency over my own health in the process . I ' ve learned to cook and fuel myself well every day . I ' ve learned not to push aside my mental health and to instead be aware of stress , anxiety , or unhappiness I might be feeling , and take action by talking to people I trust , journaling , and concentrating on my breathing . I ' ve learned to start listening to my body and not ignore any aches or pains I ' m feeling while training for my upcoming collegiate season of cross country . I ' ve learned a lot from talking to the coaches and physical therapist at MissionFit , and absorbing all the knowledge they have to offer about building strength , being intentional with my training , and setting myself up to achieve my goals on the track . I ' m very grateful for their mentorship and for all the relationships I ' ve made throughout this summer . I am excited to continue being involved at MissionFit and to continue learning from the coaches here .
As a public health student , the opportunity to witness the day-to-day activities of a public health nonprofit and see how they align with its mission has been very insightful . The exposure to physical therapy has also been valuable as another steppingstone in solidifying my interest in healthcare . Equally as valuable , if not more so , are all the life skills and learnings that I ' m walking away with that I will continue to use in my everyday life .
Wrote a first draft curriculum for MissionFit ’ s Strength Ambassadors program that detailed the purpose and activities of the program ; participated in many of these activities alongside the YouthWorkers
Researched the Logic Model and Theory of Change in public health and created models of both for the Strength Ambassadors program
Researched and learned in real-time about different aspects of movement and the importance of movement not just for physical wellbeing but also in promoting personal growth and fostering a sense of community
Created a first draft “ Book of Games ,” a database in the form of a book detailing movement-based games employed by MissionFit coaches
Shadowed a physical therapist
