Community Impact Internships Program Booklet 2022_FINAL | Page 38

My experience with MERIT this summer has been wonderful . All the interns and staff were so friendly , helpful , and supportive , and I genuinely felt like I found a new family . All the students were incredibly hard-working and determined individuals , and I ' m excited to see them become health professionals who make a difference .
For one of my main tasks , I paired up with another intern to co-teach a class this summer . This was definitely a challenging experience , as we had to make lesson plans and design a classroom from scratch . However , I really enjoyed the experience of taking charge and owning my experience . I learned a lot about confidence and empathy while leading my own classroom . I had some challenges understanding and connecting with the students , as they often expressed that our expectations were too high and that they couldn ' t reach them . Throughout the summer , we learned to listen and understand their concerns , while also holding them to a standard that pushed them to grow .
I also created the Summer Service Learning Program . Part of MERIT ' s mission is to create well-rounded scholars who are not only ready to become health professionals but also act as change agents . I was tasked with finding service opportunities for our rising juniors . I connected with 10 service-based community organizations , matched each scholar to a specific site , and coordinated a schedule where scholars served with these organizations in the mornings and returned to campus for classes in the afternoon . I served as the main communicator between scholars , my supervisor , and the organizations , and worked closely with the logistics team to coordinate service schedules with shadowing as well . I really enjoyed this work . I believe this encompassed the nature and purpose of CIIP , while also allowing me to network and learn about fantastic organizations with diverse goals . I felt like I was learning alongside these students , both in the classroom and outside , and I really appreciated that experience .
Co-taught a class called , " Being a Change Agent in Healthcare ", which explored racial , sexual , and class inequities in community health and healthcare and focused on how students ( rising juniors ) can become health professionalactivists
Organized and coordinated the Summer Service Learning Program for rising juniors to gain community service opportunities
Created partnerships between MERIT and Baltimore-based nonprofit organizations for students ' internships and future service experiences
Assisted with logistics for shadowing opportunities for MERIT scholars at Johns Hopkins Hospital and the East Baltimore Clinic
