My experience this summer has been filled with growth , both personal and plant related . My favorite parts of my time were the bonds I formed through reflective conversations while running the front desk . Over time , I was able to join this community of friendly , wellness-minded people .
The Joy Wellness Center operates free classes as a method to relieve the adverse health outcomes associated with toxic stress . I was able to see and be a part of all of the classes including gardening , meditation , yoga , and even acupuncture . I saw how these classes were the highlight of many of the attendee ’ s weeks . Some even recalled direct health impacts . One of the regulars told me that going to weekly acupuncture cured her chronic back pain .
My typical day at work consisted of setting up the rooms for the classes , signing patients in and answering questions , making reminder calls for the classes the next day , and calling future patients on the referral list . Every day I felt needed , whether that was watering the plants or educating people on nutrition appointments . Through my role at Joy Wellness Center , I was able to connect others with essential information and with trained professionals . My view on integrative health has been permanently altered , as I have seen how both the wellness center and the free clinic we are connected to have formed a symbiotic relationship - both helping each other .
I will look back at my position with a fondness for the relationships I formed with both patients and colleagues , and the conversations I have had that informed my view on the dynamics of volunteer-run medical care . I set out to further my understanding of how a large entity like the one that runs the clinic contributes to community work . My sights and experiences at various locations working with this company informed me of the dynamics , and will impact how I set up my future practice as a physician .
Managed administrative tools working with patients to schedule sessions and keep appointments up to date
Ran my first open-ended art class , guiding patients to meditate on what wellness meant to them
Managed referral lists to schedule patients for nutrition consults
