This summer , I worked with DewMore Baltimore , a community organization dedicated to increasing civic engagement among historically marginalized populations in Baltimore city through artistic expression . More specifically , I worked with the Maya Baraka Writer ’ s Institute , a five-week program aimed at empowering youth ages 14-17 through teaching poetry , leadership , and hip-hop . The namesakes of Maya Angelou and Amiri Baraka inspire the social justice focus this program encapsulates .
During my time with DewMore , I assisted with , planned , and led poetry workshops focused on poetic devices , prompting students to write their own poems spanning a wide variety of topics such as vulnerability , social justice , art , family , etc . This program enriches the students ’ artistic education through field trips , such as to the National Museum of African American History and Culture , as well as visits from guest speakers ranging from painters , to authors , to professional slam poets .
While the job did come with its challenges , watching students who began resistant to poetry open themselves up and improve their writing throughout the program was extremely fulfilling . My experience at DewMore helped me grow into a more patient and empathetic person through tasks in conflict mediation and considering the students ’ various circumstances . Teaching taught me a lot about working with youth in a professional environment and how to engage students and encourage participation .
This internship made me a better , more diverse writer with a better grasp of poetry and the many forms it may take . It is so important to consistently exercise your craft , which the staff and students have empowered me to do and to do so more confidently . Surrounded by so many amazing poets and individuals , DewMore pushed me to improve my writing through exposure to multiple forms of art and creative expression , whereas the writing education at Hopkins has pushed me to improve more out of feeling inferior and wanting to “ keep up ” with my classmates . Nobody at DewMore expected me to be anybody but who I am at this point in my life as a writer and person , which has allowed me to experiment more and express myself more freely . I have the tools and support to continue my personal and professional journey , and I have come to realize that my passion will take me farther than my formal education will in getting me to where I want to be in life .
Planned and led poetry lessons and workshops
Facilitated an understanding , nonjudgmental environment where students feel comfortable expressing themselves
