Community Impact Internships Program Booklet 2022_FINAL | Page 22

At the beginning of my summer with Dent Education , I was assigned the role of “ fellow .” While going through two weeks of staff onboarding helped me feel more connected to the Dent community , at the end of it I still felt uncertain about what my role as a fellow meant . Was I an assistant to coaches or to my site supporter ? Would I be working on administrative tasks , or would my job be more studentcentered ? Once the summer program began , I realized that I was the one in control of deciding what the role would mean for me .
I remember during staff onboarding I had a discussion with my supervisor and site supporter about what I hoped to gain from my internship . I told her , among other things , that I wanted to become more of a self-starter . Now , as I reflect on my summer experiences , I see that the fellow role could not have been a better place for me to work on my self-starting skills . Being a fellow required me to see where Dent staff and students needed help before they had to ask for it . That looked like strategically deciding which sites to go to on which days , creating lists of opening and closing circle ideas for coaches , sending out lunch buddy prompts at the beginning of each week , photographing students and posting their successes on Dent social media , and connecting with students struggling to engage . When it was raised during a meeting that guest speakers had been feeling under-appreciated , I kickstarted a social media campaign to showcase the pursuits and businesses of our Dent speakers and clients .
I ’ ve definitely grown in my ability to problem-solve and create my own action plans . While the professional skills I ’ ve learned at Dent have been invaluable , I think one of my biggest takeaways from working at Dent is understanding how a positive work culture and community is formed . Denters prioritize rest , embrace failure , ask why , and listen deeply to one another . The frequent socials and games grow strong ties between Dent staff and students . Overall , I am so happy to have been welcomed into the Dent community .
