From the first week I joined Code in the Schools , I hit the ground running , juggling various programs to create and analyze various items for the upcoming CodeWorks summer program . Just like the multitude of software we used , I was amazed by the numerous non-profits and community organizations that worked in tandem to support the Baltimore community . As we prepared computers for the program , we donated unusable or old computers to PCs for People , which provides affordable computers to low-income households and nonprofits . In training sessions with YouthWorks , I met diverse organizations that played different roles in uplifting communities in Baltimore .
Given that the CodeWorks program was entirely virtual last year , I was excited for the interactions between the online and virtual cohorts this year . Thinking back to the planning phase , I was nervous about sending out my first email to the in-person and virtual CodeWorks cohorts about orientation day . After talking with incredibly talented youth in different aspects I felt confident sending announcements to these cohorts .
In the first week , I helped present orientation slides and the employee handbook , which contained crucial information for the CodeWorkers . As the activities ramped up , I would check attendance , submit payroll , and communicate with youth to resolve any issues that arose for them .
As each day slipped by , I found myself amazed that I ’ d already been with Code in the Schools for so many weeks . It feels like I started yesterday because I ’ ve enjoyed every moment of my internship . I now have an appreciation for my access to digital tools and determination to continue serving the community by closing the digital gap in Baltimore .
