Community Impact Internships Program Booklet 2022_FINAL | Page 18

If my summer at Calvin M . Rodwell could be summed up in one word , it would be exploratory . Throughout this summer , I assumed multiple roles as a Community Impact Intern with Child First Authority . When my internship first began , the semester had not yet ended for the students at Calvin M . Rodwell , and thus , I was there to help assist with end-of-year festivities . It was here where I learned about the immense sense of community throughout the school . I helped organize giveaways with leftover non-perishable food items , toys , toiletries and clothing . I was able to see the students ’ faces light up as they took home brand-new sneakers for free , and the sense of relief on parents ’ faces as they could mark things off their shopping list . I realized that this school is more than just a place for students to learn , but it is also a place that provides care and love for all these parents and children .
This was further seen throughout the summer programming for Calvin M . Rodwell ’ s first-ever Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth Program ( CTY ). I was able to gain a thorough understanding of the amount of time and effort that goes into both planning and carrying out this program . From an administrative end , I participated in meetings regarding class scheduling and curriculum distribution . From a teacher ’ s perspective , I stepped in whenever a teacher or teaching assistant could not make it to work . I was often told at the last minute to go teach a certain grade level with limited time to structure a lesson plan for the day . Both sides proved to be far from easy . However , seeing the joy on the students ’ faces in class and hearing them excitedly shout “ Ms . Sophia ” when seeing me was definitely worth all the stress .
I overall had such a transformative , invigorating summer where I got to flourish my love for working with youth . Every child is different and deserves an equal opportunity for success , and I believe that begins with education . Child First Authority is such an incredible organization to work with , and I loved my summer with them .
Assisted administration in planning and coordinating daily scheduling for the Johns Hopkins CTY summer program
Created lesson plans and taught students a variety of CTY science-related curricula , ranging from microscope use to basic observational techniques
