Community Impact Internships Program Booklet 2022_FINAL | Page 20

This summer has been a really fulfilling and fantastic experience for me . Coming into Corner Team , I was pretty nervous , as I had never had a full-time job and the responsibility that comes with it . However , this summer has been very successful , and I have really enjoyed my experience .
The first few weeks were mostly planning and training for the camp . I spent most of my time designing eight STEM lessons , going to meetings with the other camp staff , and helping to clean and set up the gym . The camp itself is a 5-week program for middle and high school students . The students learn the basics of boxing , participate in STEM and literacy lessons , and also get to do cooking , swimming , rowing , and community service . Aside from assisting with all parts of the camp , I was in charge of leading STEM lessons . The goal of the lessons was to help students develop basic STEM skills and show them how STEM can connect to boxing and sports , as well as their daily lives . I planned lessons on topics ranging from human anatomy , to physics , to statistics . I was definitely a bit apprehensive about leading hour-long lessons , as most of my teaching experience is with smaller groups , but I have since gotten more comfortable with it and feel a lot more confident in my teaching skills . I ’ m also super grateful to my coworkers , many of whom are teachers during the school year , who helped me manage the STEM classes and jumped in when I struggled . My favorite parts of the lessons were the more spontaneous discussions where students started drawing connections between the topics and their personal lives .
This summer has been a really amazing experience and I ’ ve loved getting to know all the amazing people in the Corner Team community . I can honestly say this is the most supportive working environment I ’ ve ever been in , and I ’ m really grateful to the Corner Team staff for creating that . I feel that I ’ ve gotten to know the Baltimore community so much better this summer and finally feel like I can say that this city feels like home . I hope I can continue being involved at Corner Team somehow during the school year and am really grateful for everything that I ’ ve gotten to learn and experience this summer .
Planned and led eight different lessons connecting a variety of STEM topics to boxing during Corner Team ’ s Summer Champions Camp
Supported camp staff in facilitating other activities like boxing , community service , swimming , literacy , and cooking
