“The Tharu Homestay has brought positive changes in our society. Be it as an improvement in the status of women in our society or awareness in the locals about the environment, cleanliness; the Homestay project has been a good gift in our lives.” - Budhhi Chaudhary “Tharu women are very shy, and they lack confidence. Barauli Community Homestay has helped us (the local women) to uplift and develop ourselves. If there wouldn’t be the Barauli Community Homestay, then it would take 10-15 years more to bring such a radical change.” - Jeevan Mahato 2. Barauli Community Homestay With a very unique and characteristic culture, Tharu is indigenous to the Terai region where a tiny, but a beautiful village, Barauli stands proudly with its centuries-old tradition, arts, and crafts. Their well-preserved authentic lifestyle makes Barauli a utopia of living history, culture, music, and green vegetation. A green belt of Nepal, Terai is home to hundreds of birds and endangered animals. Floating in their traditional values, locals have come forward to initiate the Homestay project. Simple, but traditionally designed huts display the passion of the locals towards their culture and nature. Twelve small cottages, made by the locals, coats the sensation of the ancient Tharu culture. Each Homestay hut is named after the housewife who owns the house. Enjoy the Tharu Dance, perfect sight of the sun setting by the Narayani River; rich in endangered birds and animals, enjoy jungle safari with multiple elements of surprise that await your presence in the woods. Mission: Barauli Community Homestay allows Tharu ethnic communities to protect their ancient culture through Homestay projects. The Homestay projects invite guests from all over the world into the lives of the ‘shy’ Tharu people. Tharus are proud of their culture, but they are equally grateful to learn something new from the guests, as well. “Barauli Community Homestay has helped the locals to uplift their economic status. We are now able to enjoy the employment opportunity from our houses.” - Manav Chaudhary Vision: Being farmers from the early records of their history, Tharu ethnic groups are living in a vulnerable status, in terms of financial conditions. Lack of health, education, unbalanced diets, and the threats of losing their cultural values through immigration due to the lack of employment are the real issues of Tharu ethnic groups. Barauli Community Homestay wishes to bring a hope in Tharu communities from their own houses, and sees their children getting an education from the Barauli Community Homestay. 8 www.communityhomestay.com www.communityhomestay.com 9
