New Location,
New Opportunities! Academy
Communities
Our Metro North ABE location at St. Francis has
moved! We’ve relocated to the St. Francis Learning
Center (formerly Crossroads building). Community Academy in Brooklyn Center
Relocating to the St. Francis Learning Center provides
better access to our program for potential students in the
St. Francis area. There are students in the building who
could be future ABE students. Tammi Bernard, St.
Francis site coordinator and teacher, will be right down
the hall to answer any questions they may have about
the GED or College and Career Readiness for
themselves or for their friends or relatives.
Our technology offerings have also improved. At this
new location, we have more technology in our class-
rooms than we had before with several laptops and
Smart Boards we can use to enhance instruction. The
space is bright, airy and full of new life as we look
forward to the continued success of our St. Francis
program.
During the 2017-18 school year our St. Francis site
served 56 students from 10 different countries. The
youngest student was 17; the oldest student was 81.
Whether you need to prepare for your GED, brush up on
digital literacy skills, study for college entry assessments
or improve your English language skills, Metro North
ABE with St. Francis Area Schools can serve you.
Find our St. Francis site at 4111 Ambassador Blvd NW,
St. Francis, MN 55070.
The Brooklyn Center sites are pleased to be hosting
monthly visits this year from Miamon Queeglay,
the Joint Community Police Partnership liaison
with Brooklyn Center Police and Hennepin County.
She will be facilitating monthly Community
Academy presentations to the adult learners at our
Brooklyn Center sites. During her initial visit to the
classes at the beginning of October, she helped
students select presentation topics of interest.
Some of the presentations may include:
• Joint Community Police Partnership and BC
police and common personal safety tips
• Traffic Safety, common driving violations and
how to resolve traffic tickets
• The Criminal Justice System
• Healthy Relationships (order for protection)
• Child Protection
• The Immigration System & resources and
• Fire Safety/Crime Prevention
“The New American Academy” in Blaine
Beginning November 7th, 2018 the Blaine Learn-
ing Lab will be hosting experts from the
community every Wednesday morning for six
weeks. Expanding on a long term partnership with
the Blaine, Spring Lake Park, Mounds View Fire
Department and the City of Blaine, all learners will
go through a program called “The New American
Academy”. This free program, which issues
participation certificates at the end, allows for
learners to meet and become comfortable with
representatives from the fire department, along with
the Blaine Police Department, local EMT’s, and the
Anoka County District's Attorney Office. There
will also be informational sessions on the
Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program
(SNAP) and human trafficking.
