Parenting Tip

MANAGING TANTRUMS AND MELTDOWNS

At some point in their life , children go through a period of having temper tantrums and meltdowns . Our Pre-K to Grade 3 parenting educators put together some strategies to try if your child is having a tantrum or meltdown .
Avoid physical punishment .
Hitting or spanking a child for acting aggressively or doing something wrong is guaranteed to backfire . Don ’ t demonstrate behavior you don ’ t want your child to imitate .
Accept your child ’ s anger .
Let your child know that feelings of anger are ok at times . Make sure your child knows you are there to help them with the problem when they are ready . If the anger is being expressed in inappropriate ways , suggest other ways the child can express his feelings .
Teach a child how to express anger with words .
Talking is a good way to get rid of feelings of anger and frustration . When your child becomes worked up and has a meltdown encourage them to use their words rather than hitting , grabbing , or using some other physical action .
When your child resorts to a tantrum to express their needs , your response is critical . Try to respond with care and concern . This is the time your child needs you most . They need you to remain calm – which isn ’ t always an easy thing to do . They need to be comforted , and they need your help to regain control . Some strategies include :
• Ignore them if you can .
• Use a time out to give your child a chance to calm down .
• Take a time out yourself .
• Remove your child from the situation .
• Hold your child closely .
• Talk softly to your child .
• Try to figure out what your child wants and needs .
Tantrums or meltdowns are typically not a cause for concern and generally stop on their own . As your child matures , they gain self-control . They learn to cooperate , communicate , and cope with frustration .
Most importantly when things don ’ t go according to plan and a meltdown happens , be kind to yourself . Raising children is a big and important job , which all parents learn as they go . You ’ re doing your best , and you can ’ t control everything .
