Community Bank Summits Bring Experts in the Industry to Bankers
Across Iowa
IT Examination Expertise & Ag Economy Discussed During Fall Summits
Nearly 100 members gathered over the course of three Community Bankers of Iowa summit meetings held in Algona on October
15th, West Des Moines on October 16th and Council Bluffs on
October 17th.
Susan Orr, a leading financial services expert
with vast regulatory, risk management, and
security best practice knowledge and expertise was our keynote speaker. During her 14
year tenure as a bank examiner, Susan held
numerous lead positions including Regional IT
Examination Specialist, Special Assistant to the
Regional Director, Special Assistant to the Director of DSC, and Special Assistant to the Vice
Chairman of the FDIC. Susan was also a lead
instructor for the FDIC’s technology school and
was instrumental in key industry initiatives such
as the FDIC E-Risk Strategic Initiatives Risk
Monitoring Committee, the Chicago Region
Interagency Technology Group, and the Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council
(FFIEC) IT Handbook rewrites.

Her presentation gave an overview of all facets of an IT examination including the latest regulations and how they have been
developed and implemented. She discusses the difference between IT and Enterprise-wide environments and how to understand the GLBA information security regulations for an organization. Orr also gave an overview on risk assessments and who
in your bank should be the one covering the compliance and
preparing for your examination. A number of examples and solutions for best practices were presented to our members, giving
a great deal of useful information.
Other guest speakers included Dr. Ernie Goss of Creighton
University and Brian Brinch with Farmer Mac. Dr. Goss gave
an overview of the economy and the condition we are in as a
state and as a nation. He made predictions on where we will go
in the next year and had information supporting his predictions.
Mr. Brinch gave a financial update on the agricultural economy,
showing land values to livestock prices and the possible options
for the future as well.
