2013 ICBA Washington Policy Summit Taking the Message of Iowa ’ s Community Bankers to Washington D . C .

Nearly 1,000 members of the community banking industry , including the Community Bankers of Iowa ( CBI ) Executive Committee and directors from banks across Iowa , were in the nation ’ s capital for the 2013 ICBA Washington Policy Summit , April 24 - 25 . Community bankers were in Washington D . C . calling on policymakers to support regulatory-relief provisions in ICBA ’ s Plan for Prosperity and policies addressing the problem of too-big-to-fail financial institutions . They were also advocating for community bank exemptions from Basel III capital standards and opposing new powers for tax-subsidized credit unions and the Farm Credit System .

The 2013 ICBA Washington Policy Summit featured community banker meetings with members of Congress and federal financial regulators as well as remarks from top policymakers . Iowa community bankers met with all of Iowa ’ s Representatives and Senators , and during their congressional meetings CBI members

asked for the support of Senate bill S . 798 . The bill , introduced by Senator David Vitter ( R-LA ) and Senator Sherrod Brown ( D-OH ), would require large megabanks to increase their capital to a level commensurate with their size and risk . It would also provide regulatory relief to community banks .
As part of ICBA ’ s Washington Policy Summit , bankers heard directly from Senator Vitter and Senator Brown , as well as Representative Jeb Hensarling ( R-Texas ) who is the Chairman of the House Financial Services Committee .

In addition , banker meetings with the CFPB , Federal Reserve , FDIC and OCC gave community bankers an opportunity to interact with senior agency staff on concerns and questions .
In order to continue the progress and connections Iowa ’ s community bankers made while meeting with lawmakers in D . C ., CBI and ICBA are calling on community bankers to engage Iowa ’ s representatives via ICBA ’ s “ Be Heard ” grassroots website .

Community bankers can use custom resources on the site to express their support for ICBA ’ s Plan for Prosperity regulatory-relief agenda and to oppose power grab efforts by tax-subsidized credit unions . The site offers customizable emails to members of Congress and an interactive Twitter directory that community bankers can use to tweet their lawmakers with an up-to-date , pre-populated message .
