Where have all the
Senior Lenders gone...?
A banker contacted me the other day, inquiring whether
I knew of any available senior lenders. I replied “ I wish I
did”. That seems to be a major need across the state right
now. The senior lender is often the focus point for the
future of the bank, not only to actually lend the bank’s money prudently, but also
in many cases, to be the second-in-command and possible candidate to replace
a retiring CEO. But why the shortage of qualified candidates?
CBI identified this trend years ago and developed our Leaders of Tomorrow
(LOT) peer group to provide developing officers the opportunity to develop
peer group contacts outside their area of specialization, learn leadership
and organizational skills, and prepare for that next step in their careers. I am
pleased to share that a significant number of LOT members have attained CEO
positions over the years or gained internal promotions. In fact, we have former
LOT members on the board of directors of CBI. The LOT members govern
themselves, elect their own leadership, schedule meetings and meeting content,
and hold an annual conference to highlight their year. The conference for 2014
will be held March 27-28 in Des Moines, and all “not yet CEO” bankers from
across the state are welcome. Complete details, including national speakers and
the schedule, are found elsewhere in this month’s newsletter. So what does this
have to do with the headline?
Good Senior Lenders don’t just spring up, they must be built by mentoring and
training developing bankers and exposing them to the full spectrum of community
banking. I would challenge each bank in Iowa to invest in the future by selecting
a potential leader and send them to the upcoming LOT Leadership Summit.
When they return, ask them what they learned. I think you will be surprised and
pleased. And the future of an Iowa community bank is that much surer.
