Thanksgiving Wine : To Zin or Not to Zin

By Wendy Tait , CIANJ ’ s EVP , Business Development and Strategic Initiatives , Sommelier

With family , friends and dear old Aunt Gertrude seated around the table , what wine shall we pair with dinner this Thanksgiving ? Unlike apple pie , which always seems to have a broad fan base , your wine selection can feel a bit more pressured .

Provided you are serving a traditional Thanksgiving dinner replete with cranberry sauce , turkey and a slew of veggie sides , there are a few great standards for you to pull off the shelves and serve .
One of the best ways to kick off Thanksgiving is with a glass of rosé champagne , which makes for a great aperitif . Don ’ t be fooled though , as rosé champagne also pairs beautifully with turkey , enhances all that cranberry goodness and acts as a palate cleanser between savory gravy bites . For the dark meat lovers , red Zinfandel will kick up the spice and add a bit of smoke . Others may prefer the always popular Pinot Noir that cuddles right up to those creamy mashed potatoes and homecooked casseroles .
In the end , the most important thing this holiday is that you are sharing time and making memories with the people around you — wherever that may be . Cheers to breaking bread and popping bottles this Thanksgiving .
