While many cancers are common in women , breast cancer is by far the most frequent , accounting for 30 percent of all new cancer diagnoses in women . There have been significant advances in the treatment of breast cancer in the last few years . In 2020 alone , there were three drugs
approved by the U . S . Food and Drug Administration for treatment of patients with advanced HER2-positive breast cancer — tucatinib , sacituzumab govitecan-hzyi and margetuximab-cmkb — all of which improve outcomes for this patient population . We continue to await approval for new drugs for patients with estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer and triple-negative breast cancer . It is important to recognize that each woman diagnosed with breast cancer requires a personalized and individualized approach to care . We are continuing to understand which patients need intensification of treatment , and which patients benefit from de-escalation of care as , in some cases , “ less is more .” In addition to novel drugs , there has been a greater focus on breast cancer survivorship and reducing both the risk of cancer diagnosis and recurrence through nutrition and exercise .
