By Diane C . Walsh Editor

A NASCENT INDUSTRY NEEDS dedicated , trained professionals and Seton Hall Law School believes it is well-positioned to prepare attorneys and compliance professionals for the gaming industry exploding in New Jersey and around the globe .

Last March the Newark-based school launched a new gaming , compliance and integrity program with a three-day bootcamp . The participants received a primer on the laws , regulations and best practices that are the backdrop to the ethics and compliance rules that govern the gaming industry .
“ New Jersey and the entire New York metropolitan area is a hub of opportunity , jobs and growth in the entertainment , sports , gaming and hospitality industry . Gaming is just blowing up in New Jersey which is now the highest grossing state in gaming ,” said Kathleen M . Boozang , dean of Seton Hall Law . The Garden State has a vibrant history in gaming but since the launch of online gaming in 2013 and sports betting in 2018 , it has proliferated .
Graduates are increasingly entering careers in ethics and compliance , the dean noted , explaining that Seton Hall Law is ready to grow a curriculum in this space and contribute to the professional development in the sports , gaming , hospitality and entertainment industry .
“ We are all in . We want to be a resource in this important industry ,” the dean said .
GVC Holdings — one of the world ’ s largest sports-betting and gaming groups with more than 25,000 employees in 20 offices across five continents — provided seed money for Seton Hall ’ s bootcamp through its foundation . The foundation trustees include Bill Pascrell III , a Seton Hall Law alum recognized as a gaming expert ; Amani Toomer , the former N . Y . Giants wide receiver and Super Bowl XlII winner ; and Martin Lycka , director of regulatory affairs at GVC , which rebranded as the Entain Group a few months ago .
Lycka , who was part of the faculty at the bootcamp , said Seton Hall is a “ fantastic partner ” for Entain . He is looking forward to the second bootcamp scheduled for September . “ The ultimate goal is to create an online gaming institute at Seton Hall to continue to have it as one of the leading law schools in the nation with expertise in online gaming ,”
Seton Hall assembled a comprehensive and diverse faculty of 22 experts for the bootcamp , including Dallas Baker , head of international operations at Bet- Makers Technology Group , a wagering technology and data partner to the world ’ s biggest bookmakers ; Dennis Drazin , operator of Monmouth Park Racetrack ; Gregory Ehrie , special agent in charge of the FBI office in Newark ; Tim Parilla , general counsel to DraftKings ; David Rebuck , director of the NJ Division of Gaming Enforcement , and Louis Rogacki , the deputy director of the division .
The intense three-day program seeks to teach the participants key aspects of the United States and European Union ’ s gaming regulatory framework . It will also share specific tools and best practices to prevent , detect and mitigate corruption and fraud in gaming . Participants will also be taught how to identify , scrutinize and address behavior that may be unlawful and unethical .
Dean Boozang said it is important that New Jersey regulators signal they are intent on assuring integrity within the industry and contributing to the proper education of professionals for compliance with the law . Bill Pascrell IV , a recent graduate of Seton Hall Law , attended the March bootcamp , and was hired by Bet- Makers for its New Jersey operation .
