CAR T-cell therapy is a type of immunotherapy known as “ adoptive cell transfer ” treatment , in which specialized white blood cells ( T-cells ) whose job it is to attack foreign items in the body , are taken from the body , re-engineered in the laboratory , then reinfused into the body to attack certain types of cancer . Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital , an RWJBarnabas Health facility , is one of only two certified programs in the state — and the only one at a National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center — to offer CAR T-cell therapy . The U . S . Food and Drug Administration approved CAR T-cell therapy in 2017 . Currently FDA-approved , CAR T-cell therapy products are used for select patients with adult aggressive B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma or acute lymphoblastic leukemia in children or young adults .
