The publication of Ericsson’s
Mobility Report earlier this
year, which appeared
to slash the company’s
forecasted number
of connected devices
by 2020 by half to 26
billion, caused quite
a stir. The suggestion
being the vision of the
Internet of Things was
developing more slowly
than anticipated, and
that perhaps the industry
was in the midst of another
unsubstantiated hype cycle

Ericsson first outlined its vision for 50 billion
connected devices in 2009, and went on to
repeat the forecast many times thereafter as
part of its Networked Society outlook
