Joojo Addison
JA: No, I don’t think so.
What we have is pop music
with elements of Afrobeat;
that’s what I think. I may
be wrong but I think what
most music artistes are doing
isn’t Afrobeat. You have to
understand music to a certain
level in other to do music
within the Afrobeat genre
something close to what
Fela did. He’s the pioneer of
Afrobeat so one cannot do
it better, you can only come
close.
CM: Are you voting in this
year’s elections?
JA: Yeah, I am.
CM: Which party are you
voting for?
JA: Ummm…I won’t call
myself a party sympathizer.
I just vote for the party that
appeals to me based on
policies.
CM: Do you think we as a
country are heading in the
right direction?
JA: I will like to think we are.
Things are gradually changing
and this change isn’t defined
by political performances but
the mentality of the populace.
Few years ago, the voting
population in the country
thought differently from
today. Now we have more
discerning voters. Away from
politics, we have come far as a
nation however there’s more
we have to do to reach our
destination.
CM: List your top 5 rappers in
46 | Colossium . March 2020
Ghana.
JA: My top 5? I will say…
Reggie Rockstone, Obrafour,
Sarkodie, M.anifest and E.L.
CM: Is Hiplife dead?
JA: No, Hiplife isn’t dead. I
don’t think it will ever die.
Hiplife is always evolving. It’s
unfortunate we don’t have
that many artistes doing
‘Hiplife’ like before but it’s not
dead.
CM: What was your reaction
about Burna Boy not winning
the Grammy?
JA: I didn’t have any reaction.
I love Angeline Kidjoe, she’s a
legend. She really deserves to
win and she did.
CM: Do you have a girlfriend?
JA: Hahahaha…I am all about
work right now. Someday
when it’s appropriate, I will
consider having a girlfriend
but not now.
CM: In a nutshell, who will you
say is Joojo Addison?
JA: Ummm…Joojo Addison
is the man I see in the mirror.
He’s the man I see across the
street, in trotro, at church…
he’s the everyday person with
a dream. Joojo Addison is the
man who preaches through
his music, sharing his struggles
and successes with the world
through his music. Joojo
Addison is a simple man.
CM: It’s been nice talking to
you Mr. Addison.
JA: I enjoyed my time with
you too.
‘Hiplife
isn’t dead.
I don’t
think it
will ever
die. Hiplife
is always
evolving’
