BEAUTY IS
NOW WITHOUT
STANDARDS
2018
has been a great year for the fashion industry in Gha-
na. A number of fashion events have taken place since
the beginning of the year's entertainment calendar. The fashion in-
dustry in Ghana is very much in its prime. This is not to say Ghana-
ians are not fashionable (I will be severely dealt with if I dare say that).
Ghanaians do have a significant level of fashion wisdom and with
full grasp of trends and global fashion brands. It is not uncommon to
see a Ghanaian wearing renowned luxury brands at functions and
events. Although accustomed to the traditional fabrics, the Ghanaian
is equally accustomed to these foreign brands or designers. In our so-
ciety one can literally not dress up without being mindful of his style.
Style is important. It tells a lot about your personality. People address
you based on how you are dressed. How you look is important that in-
feriority complex sometimes becomes something we find ourselves bat-
tling with. In my opinion, style is a self-conscious thing – we all have
it. Interestingly, stereotyping and standardization have taken roots in
our judgments. Society has placed imaginary standards on style and
beauty such that if you do not dress like a certain personality then you
are not “stylish” – if you don’t look a certain way or like a certain per-
son then you are not beautiful or handsome enough. This is so deeply
rooted to the level of our body shape or type, complexion, height and
sex. How can any society progress with such polarities or standards?
“Beauty Without Standard” was the theme of for this year’s Accra Mall
Fashion weekend hosted by management of Accra Mall. The event took
place at the food court area of the mall. The runway was graced by divesti-
ture – tall – average height – plus size – dark – light skin – albino models
took the stage showcasing modern trends and collections. Joewackle Kusi
was one of the models who dazzled attendees with various outfits – Sports
– Classic – Executive – Casual. The theme for the event was well resonat-
ed throughout. Top photographer Franklin Gyan was there to capture ev-
ery moment of it. It was a splendid beautiful evening without standards.
