About: Hou Yi, from the Miao minority in Guizhou Province, father of 3 left-behind children
During Spring Festival in 2017, granny Wang from
next door dressed her granddaughters up in the
traditional ethnic wear. Nowadays very few young
people know how to do this. Granny Wang regularly
takes care of my kids and they got on very well. I’m
always happy when I see them.
This is where I grew up. I know every stalk of grass
and tree here. We took a photo with our children
here at this very spot during Spring Festival in 2014.
Back then the snowy landscape was so beautiful.
When I took photos of my children and my wife this
year, I kept thinking about the snow. Why hasn’t it
snowed this year?
I bought two cattle in 2014. At first I had planned
to raise more cattle but realities on the ground
compelled me to go away for work, leaving the
two cattle with my mother. Thinking about the
hardship she endures makes me really, really sad!
This is my home where my family is smoking meat.
Although the house is not that pretty, the mountains
on all sides are beautiful and it has already become a
national tourist attraction. We also bought a house in the
old town. Maybe in the not so distant future we will leave
this place. It’s bound to change a lot in the future. I really
miss this land when looking at this picture.
We don’t need beautiful photos, just real-life experiences!
