olorado Reader Educator’s Guide - 2019-2020 School Year Building Blocks Fuel Your Fun - Nutrition Colorado Academic Standard Focus Lesson Plans to go with this Reader 4th and 5th grade Reading, Writing, and Communicating: • Refer to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text. (CCSS: RI.4.1) • Determine the main idea of a text and explain how it is supported by key details; summarize the text. (CCSS: RI.4.2) • Explain events, procedures, ideas, or concepts in a historical, scientific, or technical text, including what happened and why, based on specific information in the text. (CCSS: RI.4.3) • Interpret information presented visually, orally, or quantitatively (for example: in charts, graphs, diagrams, time lines, animations, or interactive elements on Web pages) and explain how the information contributes to an understanding of the text in which it appears. (CCSS: RI.4.7) • By the end of year, read and comprehend informational texts, including history/social studies, science, and technical texts, in the grades 4–5 text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at the high end of the range. (CCSS: W.4.7) 4th and 5th grade Comprehensive Health: • Set a goal to improve food choices based on appropriate nutritional content, value, and calories. • Explain the importance of eating a variety of foods from all the food groups. • Identify healthy foods (including snacks) in appropriate portion sizes based on your personal lifestyle. Additional standards can be easily met by utilizing the complementary lesson plans from the National Agricultural Literacy Curriculum Matrix, identified to the right. The Agricultural Literacy Curriculum Matrix is an online, searchable, and standards-based database for K-12 teachers. The Matrix contextualizes national education standards in science, social studies, and nutritional education with relevant instructional resources linked to Common Core Standards. National Agricultural Literacy Outcomes Food, Health, and Lifestyle Outcomes: • Describe the necessary food components of a healthy diet using the current dietary guidelines • Identify food sources of required food nutrients What’s on MyPlate (3-5): Students will explore what it means to eat a healthy diet by comparing the foods they typically eat in a day with the recommendations of MyPlate. The Farmer Grows a Rainbow: High Five Burger (3-5): Students will understand that all food has an agricultural source that has a geographic origin. The Farmer Grows a Rainbow: Three Reason (3-5): Students will gain familiarity with the health benefits of foods contained in each group of MyPlate.
