Process of Making Hay Hay fields are started by plowing the soil and then planting seeds. The plants are perennial and grow back each season after being cut. A hay field that is taken care of properly does not need to be replanted each year. It will regrow year after year after year. For best nutritional value hay is cut when the leaves are fully developed and the flowers are not in full bloom. Sometimes a hay bine is used that cuts and crushes, or crimps, the hay plants. Hay plants will dry faster if their stems and leaves have been crimped. The cut hay is left in the field to dry in the sun. This is the origin of the expression “make hay while the sun shines.” From what you have read, what is a perennial plant? ______________________________ ______________________________ ______________________________ ______________________________ ______________________________ The tractor uses a hay rake to turn the rows over so the hay will dry uniformly on all sides.
