RENOVATING A HERITAGE HOME HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT HERITAGE HOMES BEING DEMOLISHED? The demolition of heritage structures happens all-too-frequently. Rather than eliminating these structures entirely, we should be preserving what we can for environmental and cost- related reasons. The process of preserving and improving a heritage home that is structurally sound takes a lesser environmental tole than building from scratch and allows us to create something unique, mid-modern, and durable. IS IT WORTH RENOVATING AN OLD HOUSE? Renovating an older build takes a lot of research, work, and dedication. Internal wear and tear can result in unexpected surprises that can affect the budget and timeline. Renovating an older home can be a lot more work than building new, but the result is a stunning home that has character and history. WHAT’S THE MOST COMMON THING PEOPLE ASK FOR WHEN UPDATING AN OLDER HOME? To eliminate walls and create an open floor plan, so that you have more space to entertain guests and convene with family. When you open up a floor plan, not only do you create more space but you make better use of your natural light. Written by Zakiya Kassam, As told by Daryl Berden of Ridgewater Homes, www.ridgewater.ca
