Last month our ladies and gentlemen
attended the 21st annual Missouri
Healthcare Association’s District IV Golden
Age Games. What once started out with
four teams competing against each other
at a church in Bolivar, has developed into a
district-wide 40 team event, which takes
place at three different venues spanning
three consecutive Fridays. The Bolivar
games were held on Oct. 14, which was
the one that we attended. It was held at
the SBU Meyer Wellness Center.
We had 12 residents attend the event.
Each facility had a different theme. This
year ours was a western theme. The ladies
and gentlemen wore western shirts,
cowboy hats and sheriff badges. Our
maintenance department helped construct
a covered wagon and “waterin’ hole” and
our activity assistant made a fence out of
cedar. As the day progressed, we traveled
to each event to obtain our goal for the
day, which was to win medals. We had to
believe in ourselves as we competed
against 11 other facilities in a variety of
events including cow milking, basketball
toss, hog calling, bingo, soccer kick,
horseshoes, trivia, and wheelchair races.
Our residents also participated in a craft
competition, which consisted of embroidery work, yarn work, handiwork, painting/
artwork, woodwork, jewelry “other” work
and a group craft. This section was open to
ladies and gentlemen who could not attend as well as those who could. Each
team was also judged as to their “spirit”
that they showed throughout the day with
cheers, comradery, and companionship
with others. The winner of this award received a traveling trophy and a $250 gift
card for the activity department. This year,
we won third place in the Spirit Award competition. We are edging closer to first so
watch out next year!
All in all, we had a great time at this
year’s games. We brought home several
medals. Betty Jo Owens was our multiple
winner with a silver in hog calling, bronze in
quiz bowl, and silver in wheelchair races.
Brenda Stewart won bronze in horseshoes.
Johnny Barber won bronze in woodworking.
Rita Sexton won fifth place in painting and
gold in horseshoes. Bettie Eyssell won
fourth in Jewelry. Hazel Claspill won silver
and Thelma Marsh won bronze in embroidery. Our group craft, which was an etched
glass bird bath, won third place. We were
very competitive with the other teams as
we brought home third place for highest
team score. But more importantly, we
brought home many memories shared with
other ladies and gentlemen from other long
term care facilities. New friendships were
made and many smiles were shared
throughout the day.
We would like to thank our staff, family
members and volunteers who came to help
cheer our ladies and gentlemen on and for
assisting them to their events. We are one
big family and we share our love each and
every day.
Congratulations to Citizens Memorial
Health Care Facility for winning first place
in Spirit Award and to Butterfield Residential Care Center for winning first place in
high team score.
