Ha r ol d & N o ma M on to go m er y
This month, Harold and Noma Montgomery
will celebrate 70 years marriage. We sat
down with the couple to try to figure out
how their marriage has lasted so long.
Noma was born on September 24, 1924,
to Oscar and Leta Scott of Windyville, Mo.
Growing up in Windyville, Noma attended
school at London Smoke, where she graduated
from the eighth grade.
Harold was born on April 22, 1924, to
William and Wilma Montgomery of Buffalo,
Mo., where he grew up and attended
school.
Harold and Noma first met when they
were freshmen in high school. They went
out on a few dates, but it was nothing too
serious. They graduated in 1942.
After graduation, Harold decided move to
California with some buddies and worked at
the Douglas Air Craft plant. After a year,
Harold returned home and enlisted in Air
Force. Harold served for three years and,
after his discharge in 1946, returned to
Buffalo. While stationed overseas, Harold
never forgot Noma. The couple stayed in
contact the entire time.
When Harold returned, he proposed to
Noma. The couple were married on May 10,
1946, at the house of Rev. Lynch at Red
Top. The couple had two daughters, Jeanne
and Suzy. Harold and Noma have since
been blessed with eight grandchildren and
14 great-grandchildren.
For many years, Harold and Noma owned
and operated Montgomery Oil Company,
located just north of Buffalo on Highway 73.
Harold worked as an oil jobber. He would
transport oil and diesel to service stations,
the city, schools, the highway department
and farms around the Buffalo area. Noma
took orders and ran the office. After a few
years, the couple expanded their business
by opening a filling station. “We worked
long hours making our company grow, and
it was worth it in the end,” Harold explains
with a smile. “We met a lot of people who
became lifelong friends.”
In 1985, Harold and Noma retired. In his
free time, Harold would rebuild and sell
wrecked cars. He also worked for Kevin
Sharp, until his eyes began to fail him.
After their official retirement, the real fun
began. “We loaded up the car and took off
for destinations unknown,” Noma said with
a giggle. “If we got the inkling, we went
wherever we wanted.” Harold and Noma
were lucky enough to have been able to
travel throughout the U.S. and Canada.
So what was their secret to a long
marriage??? “We both agree to work hard
and love each other no matter what.” the
couple stated. Come visit Harold and Noma
at their anniversary party on May 10, at 2
p.m.
