Dudley Huckaby
Dudley Huckaby was born on May
11, 1926, to Bertie and Jean Huckaby
just southwest of Urbana. He had two
brothers, who passed away at an early
age, and one sister.
Growing up on the family farm, Dudley
had a lot of responsibility. He would
tend to the dairy cows, hogs, chickens
and also help his father with other
chores.
In 1942, after graduating from
Urbana high school, he tried to enlist in
the Army but wasn’t allowed to, so he
returned and continued to help run the
family farm. One day he met Christena
Bridges, a beautiful girl who was visiting his mother and father. “ It was love
at first sight,” Dudley stated. “The minute
I saw her, I fell in love.” On Oct. 20,
1945, the couple was married in a
small ceremony at the home place.
The couple were blessed with three
children: Beverly, Marilyn and Johnny.
Dudley and Christena have also been
blessed with eight grandchildren and
numerous great-grandchildren.
Dudley continued worked on his
family farm. When he wasn’t caring for
the animals, Dudley would drive the
fertilizer and lime trucks. “Farm life is
hard work,” Dudley states. “It is not
just a five day a week job. It involves
many hours of hard labor, but the rewards are plentiful.”
In the early 1980’s, The Huckaby’s
decided to sell the family farm and
moved to Bolivar. To stay busy, Dudley
got a job as a Greeter at the Bolivar
Walmart. He enjoyed visiting with the
customers and helping assist them
with their needs.
After Dudley retired from Walmart, he
and Christena traveled across the United
States. While traveling, Dudley and
Christena would attend church services
at various Southside Missionary Baptist
Church.
In 2009, just after they celebrated
their 64th wedding anniversary, sadly
Christena passed away. Dudley lived
with his children until 2014 when he
moved to Colonial Springs Healthcare
Center. Now, Dudley takes great joy in
the visits he receives from his family,
especially when the girls play the piano
and sing to him. You can see the pride
in his eyes as he applauds their musical
talents.
Thank you Dudley for sharing your
life with us!
