RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT
Paul Johnston
Paul Edward Bennett Johnston was born Jan . 24 , 1953 , to Helen and Paul Bennett in Jasper , Texas . Paul has one brother , Roy , who lives in Buffalo .
When Paul was around two years old , his mother and father divorced . Within the next year , Paul ’ s mother married Leonard Johnston who adopted the boys , thus acquiring the name Johnston . Paul ’ s step father was in the Army , so the family traveled around much of his younger years . When he was 18 , Paul received his G . E . D . and enlisted in the Air Force . Paul served our nation for eight years during the Vietnam War . He was honorably discharged in 1979 .
He returned to Texas after his service and began working at Burns Security Agency in Beaumont . He started out as a security guard and was promoted to a supervisory positon within a few years .
When he came to Burns for his interview , Paul met Michele Batterbee , who was the secretary for the company . “ It was love at first sight ,” said Paul . “ We dated a few times and within the year , we were married . I loved that woman so much . We were married 39 wonderful years .”
Paul had to retire from Burns after 39 years of employment due to failing health .
During Hurricane Harvey , not only did Paul lose his home but he also lost his precious wife . “ I miss her so much and can ’ t wait to see her again someday ,” said Paul .
Since his home was condemned , Paul moved to Buffalo to live with his brother , Roy . After only a short time here , he fell and suffered a stroke .
Paul came to Colonial Springs to receive rehabilitation and has been a part of our family ever since .
Paul is a fun-loving person , who likes to joke around with staff and other residents . He also likes to go on wheelchair walks , watch movies , talk to his brother and wife , Mary via FaceTime , but most of all he loves his coffee . He always has a coffee in is hand . His motto is : “ A cup of coffee a day keeps the grouchies away .”
