Madge Bennett was born on
June 12, 1919, in Protem, Mo. She
was the eldest child of George and
Bertha Gray. This month, she will
celebrate her 97th birthday.
When she was eight years old,
her family moved to Vinita, Okla.,
where she grew up on a farm and
graduated from Vinita High School
in 1938.
Growing up, she loved to play
basketball. “Back then we only
played half court. I was fast and
quick with the ball,” Madge explained. “I spent more time on the
floor than on my feet.”
One night, when Madge was
hanging out with her girl friends,
she met George Bennett. They
dated for six months and were
married on Aug. 4, 1942 in
Claremore, Okla. “We got there at
about midnight and had to get the
preacher out of bed for him to
marry us,” she said with a smile.
“That wasn’t uncommon in those
days.” .
Out of this marriage, Madge and
George were blessed with a beautiful baby, Judith Rose. Since then,
Madge has been able to enjoy one
granddaughter, Leigh Ann, and a
great granddaughter, Rosie.
Madge worked for Southwest Bell
while George farmed. In 1946, the
Bennett family relocated to
Dallas County. For the next 20 years,
Madge worked as a case worker for
the local welfare office.
After her retirement, Madge
decided to raise some calves. “For
the next 20 years, I nurtured and
provided TLC to hundreds of calves,
never losing a one,” Madge said
proudly.
She is a member of the Buffalo First
Baptist Church and attends their
Wednesday Bible studies.
In her spare time, she enjoyed
reading, working on word puzzles,
watching the news and socializing
with her fellow residents and friends.
