Res id e nt S po t li gh t
Res s i e Pete r s
Ressie Peters turned 100 years old
this year on March 14. She is a true
“Dallas Countian” being born, raised and
lived her entire life in this area. She is
the daughter of John and Susan Arnold
and was the seventh of eight children,
having three brothers and four sisters.
She grew up in the Urbana area and
graduated from Urbana High School in
1934. While in school, Ressie met her
future husband, Everett Peters, at a party. As soon as he met her, “he fell for me
like a ton of bricks,” says Ressie. They
were married on Aug. 27, 1934, in Oklahoma while Everett’s parents were visiting with is brother. “My mom made me
the prettiest dress and hat to match. It
was the perfect wedding,” says Ressie.
The couple lived in Buffalo where
Everett opened “Peter’s Barber Shop.”
“Back then hair cuts were 25 cents and
straight razor shaves were 15 cents,”
commented Ressie.
The Peters had two children. Larry
resides in Buffalo and Marilyn Cates lives
in Florida. Ressie has five grandchildren
and nine great grandchildren.
In Ressie’s spare time, she enjoyed
watching children. “I never had any more
than three at a time. I just loved watching the children grow up in my care,” she
says.
Ressie also used her spare time crocheting afghans. She made one for each
of her grandchildren when they were
born and then another, much larger one,

when they got older. “I don’t recall how
many I have made, but I would still be
doing it if my eyes didn’t fail me,” shares
Ressie.
When asked about the best advancement in technology in the past 100
years, she said it would be transportation. “We went from horse and buggy or
walking to cars, trucks and planes. I remember walking to school six miles each
way when snow was up to the fence
posts. Momma just kept us wrapped up
and warm. Girls didn’t wear pants back
then either.”
Ressie says that she has lived a
wonderful life. She and Everett spent 45
wonderful years together and she misses
him dearly.
“I just take one day at a time and
thank the Lord for what he has given me.
I am blessed with so many friends, but
most of all I am honored to have my
family whom I love dearly,” says Ressie.
