“NO FALL ZONE” Courtesy Rambling Oaks Courtyard T   he facts about falling might make you lose your balance––so you might want to sit down for this. Falling is the most common and most serious of all health problems facing seniors. One out of every three adults (age 65+) fall each year. At least 1/3 of the falls are due to hazards in their own home. Roughly 60% of people, who fell in the previous year, will fall again. Falling is the leading cause of hospital admissions AND injury-related deaths among seniors. While all falls cannot be avoided, certain measures can be put into place to make your home as safe as possible. At Rambling Oaks we continually enhance our community’s awareness regarding safety; we stress the importance for us to speak up and discuss both the falls and near misses. Rambling Oaks Courtyard has made it a TOP priority to decrease falls in our community. Our staff is expected to frequently evaluate our residents and assess the safety of their living quarters; eliminating any and all risks they found to be potentially hazardous. Rambling Oaks Courtyard emphasizes how important it is for our residents to remember to always “CALL before you FALL.” There are some simple changes you can make to your home that will substantially reduce your risk of falls in the future, such as: • Choose to wear close-toed shoes with non-skid soles when at all possible. • Remove throw rugs (especially in pathways). • Keep a nightlight or flashlight by your bed, AND leave your bathroom light ON at night. • NEVER place items in a walkway. • NEVER have electrical cords in areas that you walk. • IF you have a pet, consider attaching a small bell to their collar so that you are always aware when your pet is nearby. • Rise slowly and sit on the edge of the bed for a minute or two before rising. • Use walkers, canes, etc., as needed for ambulation. Take a look around your home and pretend that you’re seeing it for the first time. Are there objects or furniture arrangements that could be hazardous? I guarantee you that gorgeous throw rug won’t look nearly as attractive from your hospital bed! Don’t wait until you, or someone you love, FALLS to take action! Being proactive could be what stops you from becoming part of the statistic––small steps today can prevent missteps tomorrow.
